2011 Regents' Distinguished Alumnus Award Recipient John E. Olerud, MD


A celebrated physician, renowned dermatologist, and esteemed professor and researcher, Dr. John E. Olerud ('65 BS Zoology), played three years of varsity baseball for WSU and was named an All American in 1965. While pursuing his pre-medical studies, he played seven years of professional baseball.

Dr. Olerud has served his medical profession in a number of prominent roles. He is the George F. Odland Professor of Medicine and head of the Division of Dermatology at the University of Washington. He is a principal investigator for numerous federal grants, including a training grant for physicians and scientists in skin biology.

Dr. Olerud is also a prolific researcher, publishing 92 peer-reviewed articles and numerous chapters and abstracts since 1974, and he has served as president of the Association of Professors of Dermatology.

"John Olerud leads by inpsiration and example," says nominator Chuck "Bobo" Brayton. "We can be proud of his exceptional service to the medical profession."


The Regents' Distinguished Alumnus Award is the highest honor
the University bestows on our alumni.



The Washington State University Board of Regents is the University's governing body whose broad responsibilities are to supervise, coordinate, manage and regulate the WSU system, as provided by state statute. The Board of Regents consists of 10 members, one of whom is a student.
