Student Regent Application

WSU Student Regent Overview

The Student Regent represents Washington State University (WSU) students (Everett, Global, Pullman, Spokane, Tri-Cities, Vancouver campuses) and will hold full rights and voting privileges granted to all members of the Washington State Board of Regents, with the exception of votes on matters relating to the hiring, discipline, or tenure of faculty members and personnel.

Formal Qualifications

  • Must be a currently enrolled student at Washington State University at time of appointment, as well as throughout their term
  • Must have a minimum 2.0 grade point average at Washington State University

Preferred Qualifications

  • Have a general knowledge of the legislative process in the state of Washington
  • Possess a basic understanding of the functions of the Washington State University Board of Regents
  • Have a strong desire to represent all Washington State University students

General Expectations

It is encouraged that the Student Regent:

  • Be able to attend student government meetings on each campus (Student Government Council) and Global Campus
  • Have a working relationship with the faculty and staff throughout the university
  • Serve as a liaison between the student population and WSU entities
  • Travel to engage with students and administration from each campus to foster a deeper understanding of the WSU system

Selection Process

Applications are due by March 22, 2026, 8:00 p.m. Per the American Disability Act, if you need another form of application submission, please contact the resources listed.

After all applications have been reviewed, the Student Regent Recommendation Committee will select candidates to be interviewed, which will be held on April 25-26, 2026. Applicants will be notified for a potential interview time.

Following interviews and internal deliberations, the Chair of the Recommendation Committee will send at least three and not more than five candidates to the governor’s office in Olympia.

The governor will select the student member from a list of candidates, with the consent of the Washington State Senate. That candidate’s information will be forwarded to the Washington State University Board of Regents.


The Role of a Regent

The Washington State University Board of Regents is the university’s governing body whose broad responsibilities are to supervise, coordinate, manage and regulate the WSU system, as provided by state statute. The Board of Regents consists of 11 members, one of whom is a student and one of whom is a faculty member.

Recommendation Committee Membership

The Recommendation Committee membership has been established by a Memorandum of Understanding agreed upon by the presidents of ASWSU, GPSA, ASWSU-Vancouver, ASWSU-Spokane, ASWSU-Tri Cities, ASWSU-Everett, and the WSU Global Campus.

The committee is comprised of the following:

  • Two (2) Pullman students designated by ASWSU President
  • GPSA President or Vice President
  • One (1) representative from each of WSU’s other campuses (Vancouver, Tri-Cities, Spokane, Everett) and the Global Campus for a total of five representatives

February 11—Student Regent Applications available online at 8:00 a.m.
March 22—Applications due by 8:00 p.m.
April 25-26—Recommendation Committee Interviews of Applicants
May 1—Finalists sent to the Governor
July 1—Appointment decision by the Governor
