The Board of Regents of the University of Washington held a joint meeting with the Board of Regents of Washington State University on Saturday, November 18, 2006, beginning at 11:30 a.m. in the Center for Undergraduate Education Room 518 on the Pullman campus.

Present from Washington State University: Regents Kenneth Alhadeff (Chair), Theodor Baseler, Francois X. Forgette, Laura Jennings, Kyle M. Smith, Christopher J. Marr, Connie Niva, V. Rafael Stone, Michael J. Worthy, and President of Washington State University V. Lane Rawlins.

Present from the University of Washington: Regents Frederick C. Kiga (Chair), Kristianne Blake, Jennifer K. Faubion, William H. Gates, William L. Rasmussen, Constance L. Proctor, Herb Simon, and President of the University of Washington, Mark A. Emmert.

Guests: At approximately 12:30 p.m., Governor Christine Gregoire joined the meeting.

Opening Comments and Introductions. There were welcoming remarks from Ken Alhadeff, Chair of the Board of Regents for Washington State University, Fred Kiga, Chair of the Board of Regents for the University of Washington, V. Lane Rawlins, President of Washington State University and Mark A. Emmert, President of the University of Washington.

Open Discussion of Join WSU and UW Activities

Health Sciences in Spokane. Brian Pitcher, Chancellor of WSU Spokane provided an overview of Health Sciences in Spokane and the partnerships that have been developed within the surrounding community.

Discussion of “Washington Learns” and Other Higher Education Issues with Governor Gregoire. Governor Gregoire discussed the five major initiatives as basic strategies to reform the education system in the State of Washington. The five initiatives include: 1) investing in early learning so that children start off as lifelong learners; 2) improving math and science teaching so that our citizens have a competitive edge; 3) personalizing learning so that every student has the opportunity to succeed; 4) offering college and workforce training for everyone; and 5) holding the system accountable for results.

At 1:30p.m., the Regents’ meeting adjourned.
