Tracy Klein

Tracy Klein, Ph.D., FAAN, FAANP was appointed to the Washington State University Board of Regents in 2025. Regent Klein is a Professor at Washington State University College of Nursing, hired in 2012. She is a family nurse practitioner with expertise in both primary and urgent care who currently serves as the Medical Director for Springdale Job Corps. Regent Klein is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, American Association of Nurse Practitioners and the Institute for Regulatory Excellence. Her scholarship encompasses the interface between public policy and prescribing as it relates to practitioner, patient and institutional factors. Her research on controlled substances and pharmacotherapeutics is published in the Journal of Rural Health; Clinical Toxicology, Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research; Journal of Pediatric Pharmacology and Therapeutics; Substance Abuse Treatment, Prevention and Policy; University of Toronto Medical Journal; and the Journal of Pediatric Healthcare.

A two-time graduate of Washington State University (Ph.D. and Family Nurse Practitioner post-masters) Regent Klein teaches Advanced Pharmacology, Rational Prescribing, and Clinical Decision-making and is also a long-term preceptor of PharmD teaching residents from Oregon Health and Sciences University and Washington State University. She is a past Board member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, ARNP United, and Washington AAUW and the current nurse representative on the Oregon State Prescription Drug Monitoring Program Advisory Committee. Her service at WSU includes serving as chair of the Faculty Status Committee; chair and executive member of the Faculty Senate; and Assistant Director of the Center for Cannabis Policy, Outreach and Research (CCPRO); in addition to serving as the chair of the College of Nursing’s Faculty Affairs Committee and a member of the Health Policy Committee. Regent Klein recently completed an 18-month term with the American Society of Addiction Medicine’s Benzodiazepine Tapering Committee which developed the first US guidelines on determining when and how to taper benzodiazepines safely.

A dedicated educator, Regent Klein has advanced graduate NP education through interprofessional teaching, mentorship of PharmD residents, and integration of bias consciousness into pharmacology training, preparing the next generation of nurse practitioners for thoughtful, evidence-based practice. https://labs.wsu.edu/tracy-klein/
