December 11, 2006
The Board of Regents of Washington State University held a Special Regents' Meeting pursuant to call at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, December 11, 2006, in the Crater Lake Board Room at the Westin Hotel, 600 Bellevue Way, NE, in Bellevue, Washington.
Present: Regent Kenneth Alhadeff, Chair; Regents Elizabeth Cowles, Theodor Baseler, Francois Forgette, Laura Jennings, Connie Niva, Rafael Stone, and Michael Worthy.
1. Review of Presidential Search Process. Chair Kenneth Alhadeff commenced the meeting in Open Session and provided an update on the search process thus far, stating that the search had been underway for approximately three months. He stated that the Regents, particularly those on the Presidential Search Advisory Committee, had engaged in and learned a lot from the outreach process, as well as received very valuable feedback. He noted, further, that the university community had been kept apprised of the progress of the search through periodic updates. Regent Alhadeff also said that during this engagement period, the search consultant had been actively recruiting candidates for the position and that she had been working with the search advisory committee to evaluate and screen the prospects.
Regent Alhadeff stated that the purpose of this special meeting was to meet with the Presidential Search Advisory Committee to review their progress and that the Regents would be convening with that Committee shortly in executive session to receive a report on their progress and evaluation of candidates to this point. The Regents discussed some of the feedback that had been received from the public forums, as well as earlier discussions concerning the direction of the University and what the Regents were looking for in a new president. The feedback received included recommendations to build on the progress WSU has made under President Rawlins' leadership, particularly as outlined in WSU's strategic plan. Additionally, there was a strong consensus concerning finding a president who could take the University "to the next level," including, for example, placing an emphasis on graduate education and internationalizing the University to meet the needs of a global economy.
2. Meeting with the Presidential Search Advisory
Committee and Evaluation of Candidates. At 10:20 a.m., the
Regents convened in executive session to review and evaluate
potential candidates for the presidency of Washington State
University. The Regents first joined members of the Presidential
Search Advisory Committee in the Lake Chelan room of the Bellevue
Westin and received evaluation reports from members of the
Committee until 12:20 p.m. The Regents remained in executive
session throughout the afternoon to further evaluate candidates,
although they moved from the Lake Chelan room to the Crater Lake
Board Room following the evaluation reports from the Committee. At
5:00 p.m., the Regents reconvened in open session and adjourned the
Approved by the Board of Regents at its meeting held on January 26, 2007, at Lighty Student Services Building, Room 405, Pullman, Washington.
